Dolphins Spared: The Cove Credited With Victory

The Cove, a revealing documentary which focuses on the horrific slaughter of dolphins, has drawn much international attention in recent months. So much, in fact, that the launch of the annual dolphin hunting season in Japan’s small fishing community of Taiji was postponed last week. Taiji, the village exposed in the riveting documentary, is known for the annual capture and slaughter of more than 2,000 dolphins. This number contributes to more than 20,000 dolphins allotted for capture in Japan each year.

Sadly, reports indicated that the postponement was lifted yesterday as over a dozen fishing boats left the harbors of Taiji, capturing approximately 100 bottlenose dolphins and 50 pilot whales. However, an exciting twist has galvanized the animal-rights community. Though it was believed that the dolphins would be slaughtered, it appears that the fishermen are adhering to a “nonslaughter policy” due to international criticism. Ric O’Barry, star of the The Cove, told The Associated Press that he was “elated” and said, “When I heard that, I did a backflip off the bed here.”

Though these events shed light on the overwhelming power of film and the impact that a handful of fervent souls can have on the international community, it is only one step on a very arduous road. The fishermen went on to say that they plan to sell 40 to 50 dolphins to aquariums while releasing others back to the sea. The 50 pilot whales will not see a similar fate as they will be slaughtered and sold for their meat.

So what can be done now? Well, not to state the obvious, but watch the film if you haven’t already! If you have seen the documentary, there are still many other ways to contribute to the cause. Educate yourself and check out this list of more ways to take action.
